As
We Join Our Hands (Lighting of the Unity Candle)
Lyrics and Music by William West
As we join our hands
Let us join as one
One body, one soul
One love till the end of time
We will live
We will love
We will die someday
But till then
I am yours to cherish for always
And with a ring to show our love
A gentle reminder when times get rough
Never shall we part
Or even turn aside
With you, my love
There is nothing to hide
As we join our lives
Let us join as one
Seeking guidance and grace
From God who gave us this love As we join our hands
Let us join as one
One body, one soul
One love till the end of time
We will live
We will love
We will die someday
But till then
I am yours to cherish for always
And with a ring to show our love
A gentle reminder when times get rough
Never shall we part
Or even turn aside
With you, my love
There is nothing to hide
As we join our hands
Let us join as one
One body, one soul
One love till the end of time

As We Join Our Hands was written on December 1,
1981 for Melanie Mann in celebration of her wedding
day. Melanie was the vocalist at my Senior Piano
Recital held August 13, 1981. Melanie sang many
of my songs over the years and was a great sounding
board. She was a great friend and fan.
As We Join Our Hands was rearranged in 1989 for
another wedding. In December of 2000 my stepson
Tommy announced his engagement to Nicole and asked
if I would perform a song (singing) at their wedding.
As We Join was decided would be the song and perfect
for the lighting of the Unity Candle. The recorded
version here was completed in late April just a
week and a half before the wedding. If you listen
carefully to the last instrumental fanfare that
closes out the song you will here a hint of the
theme from the old Irish Springs soap commercial
(Don't laugh! I was celebrating my Irish heritage.
Who am I kidding - I just thought it was a hoot!)
