How
Can I Believe words and music
by Susan Bowman and William West
I sometimes feel
sadness will always be
my heritage
Sadness for the world
and all the people I know
and the ones I don't
I wonder why life is
and why it has to be the way it is
so sad
How can I believe in you
when you don't do the things
you say you'll do
How can I believe in you
when you say the words I love you
Of all the love
that you could have given me
you loved me
only when you needed me
you were just like the rest
using me
I wonder why
this world is full of pain
I wonder why
lonely people all feel the same way
and try so hard to deny it
How can I believe in you
when you don't do the things
you say you'll do
How can I believe in you
when you say the words I love you
Of all the love
that you could have given me
you loved me
only when you needed me
you were just like the rest
using me
Its no wonder
lonely people all feel the same.

Story Behind the Song
Susan origanally approached me back in 1985 to get
together for a song writing session. She liked to
write lyrics and sing, while I liked to write music
to lyrics and not sing. It was a great match. Our
one and only two hour session produced "How
Can I Believe" which was originally titled
"Using Me."
Susan had written a rough draft of the lyrics before
our meeting. We retooled the lyrics and added words
as we wrote the vocal lines and harmonys.
New music and lyrics have been added for this recording
to add length and vary the musical structure of
the piece. This said, the new lyrics were inspired
and taken from notes and ideas from our session
so many years ago.
